9. A Visit from President Washington

The display case in front of you — it has a very old-looking newspaper in the center. Look closely at it.

April 21, 1791. If you look on the left-hand side, in the middle of the page, second column from the left; there’s a small headline that says “Fredericksburg”.

President George Washington, it says, “arrived in town on his tour to the southward," and enjoyed an elegant dinner at Town Hall. This is the very first primary source account we have of presidential travel.
