The President traveling by boat never quite captured the imagination as did other forms of travel. But boats are still part of the story. One of the best known presidential yachts was the USS Sequoia, which you see here. It had originally been built for a Texas oilman, but was purchased by the government in 1931 - and used to intercept rum runners during Prohibition.
It later became the presidential yacht — and ironically, President Lyndon Johnson complained there was no bar on board — so he installed a wet bar on this boat… that had once been used by the government to confiscate booze during Prohibition.
